Misc.
Second-draft status achieved on "In the Age of Iron and Ashes", my dancer story:

They ran the girl down, in the grey light of dawn: a ring of copper-mailed horsemen, racing after her until her exhaustion finally felled her.

Yudhyana sat on his horse, shivering in the cold morning air, and thought of home--of the narrow, spice-filled streets of Rasamuri, and of his daughters, shrieking as he raced them in the courtyard. Anything to prevent him from focusing on what was happening.

Afterwards, they tied the girl's unconscious body to the saddle of a white mare. Pakshman, Yudhyana's second-in-command, nodded at him, waiting for orders.

"Back," Yudhyana said. His gaze was on the plains, sloping down to the river Kuni--and the cloud of dust that marked the advance of the Sharwah army.

This is what comes of reading too much Mahabharata, I guess. I need to do some research on some Aztec stuff for another short I'm working on, which needs some more plot incidents...

In non-writing news, I found out there was an anime that was based on the Count of Monte Cristo, one of my all-time favourite novels. So obviously I had to watch that :-) (pretty good so far, from the 3 episodes I've watched). I like the voiceover in French at the beginning of each episode, which is pretty entertaining when you're a native speaker. The art is sometimes weird and not very easy on my eyes, which means I can't really watch more than one or two episodes before fatigue settles in.

To my f-list: any other anime I'm missing out on? I've watched (and liked) Utena, Mai Hime and Full Metal Alchemist. I've watched (and didn't like quite so much) Trigun and Cowboy Bebop--I found both of those slick, but the characters just didn't click with me. I've tried watching Gundam Wing, but I got bored.
Somebody recommended Avatar, and I can't really bring myself to watch it either, not for more than a few episodes at a time. I guess it's a combination of the Asian stuff being subtly off-base (starting with the elements system, which is just so not Chinese), and of the strong emphasis on martial arts and fight scenes (which I skip because I get bored by them).

Thanks!

I've been watching Witchblade lately. It's...different...

I can't watch Avatar either! I was starting to think there was something wrong with me because everyone seems to gush over it and I'm just sort of, "Eh..."

I can't remember if I'd previously asked you if you'd watched Outlaw Star. It was set in space, which is something that made it different from some of the Earth-based SF.

One of my guilty pleasures is Inuyasha. Sadly...that series didn't conclude...well, in manga books (although I don't know if they're available in the English I'd need). Inuyasha uses that jewel shard myth that I see reappearing in Japanese stories.

How long do you think it'll take for you to finish reading the Mahabharata? *grins* Of course, if you read as fast as you write, shouldn't take you too long.

Wait.

I am at ep 132 of Inuyasha.

There isn't an end yet...or they didn't make it to the end of the manga?

Mwerp!

Oh, sorry; I was definitely unclear (to borrow from Ralph Wiggum, "me write bad? That's unpossible")!

Inuyasha the TV series didn't finish. But...it continues in the manga book series and is supposedly on its way to a finish. But maybe not in English. Or maybe.

I lack closure.

Thanks!

I think you did mention Outlaw Star before, but I had forgotten. I'm going to try a few episodes after I'm done with Gankutsuou and see if I like it.

I only read the Mahabharata a few days of the week, so it may be a while before I do finish it. I'm about halfway through book 1.

I loved the excerpt. It's amazingly atmospheric and involving, even with just the short extract.

Ha, sounds interesting. I'm worried about too many Ninja fights, but if the characters are good, why not...
Thanks!

I can ;)
I've read mixed reviews of it, so I was hesitant to "commit", but I'll give it a try. Thanks!

I thought Death Note was good (also the non-anime Japanese movie version). And older ones that I liked included Princess Mononoke, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Spirited Away. I heard Samurai Champloo was good
haven't tried it yet though.

I've seen Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and most Miyazaki and enjoyed them tremendously. I wasn't so hooked on Death Note, which is too dark for me, honestly (lots of my friends have recommended it to me, but I just can't get into it--must be a personal thing).
Will keep an eye out for Ghost in the Shell, which I think I can get pretty easily, and for the rest of those you mentioned.
Thanks!
